Marina District Revitalization Plan

The Marina District Revitalization Plan (MDRP) is an ambitious project led by NPG Planning Solutions, aimed at transforming Port Colborne’s waterfront west of the Welland Canal into a “vibrant waterfront community embracing growth for future generations”. The 27.3-hectare area encompasses critical assets such as H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, Sugarloaf Marina, and the Waterfront Centre, which is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for redevelopment.

Guiding Design Principles

  • Promoting Active Transportation: Establishing bike lanes, bike-share stations, and multi-use pathways.
  • Enhancing Connectivity: Creating robust networks linking downtown and the waterfront.
  • Leveraging the Waterfront Centre: Positioning it as a central hub for activities.
  • Strengthening Green Infrastructure: Expanding tree canopies and integrating sustainable solutions.
  • Active Placemaking: Encouraging engagement through interactive and community-focused design

Revitalization Plan

The MDRP integrates residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational uses to create a dynamic and inviting destination for residents and visitors alike.

The plan incorporates sustainable elements such as permeable surfaces, flood mitigation barriers, and energy-efficient technologies. Innovations include multi-use trails that double as flood barriers and continuous seating integrated into floodwalls. These features ensure the district’s environmental resilience while enhancing the user experience.

The Marina District Revitalization Plan exemplifies visionary urban design, balancing heritage preservation, sustainability, and modern functionality. Through collaborative planning and strategic investments, it aims to create a thriving waterfront community that celebrates Port Colborne’s unique character.
