Planning in Practice: NPG Field Trip Explores Toronto’s Built Environment

On October 17, 2025, the NPG team participated in a walking tour through downtown Toronto to explore how planning principles are applied in real urban settings.

The day-long agenda allowed staff to engage with various built projects and public spaces that reflect key themes in planning. These include adaptive reuse, transit-oriented development, heritage conservation, intensification, and public space design.

The tour included stops at Union Station and the Toronto Music Garaden, where landscape design connects with cultural expression along the waterfront. The group also visited The Well, a forward-thinking mixed-use development recently completed in 2024, and the King Toronto Condos, a striking residential project under construction that combines vertical gardens with preserved brick elevation. At the St. Lawrence Market, a vibrant public marketplace and cultural hub of Toronto, the team reflected on how the heritage property can remain relevant and economically active in modern urban life.

The field trip encouraged discussion, observation, and shared learning among the NPG team. At NPG, we value continuous learning and development as well as opportunities to connect policy and design with real-world applications.

We look forward to future chances to explore and learn from the places that shape our work and communities.
